On Dying of Dementia in a Capitalist System
After a violent episode on Memorial Day, we placed my partner Jim in memory care. 11 weeks later he died. This short film, made in partnership with Chilean animators Sebastián Bisbal and Natalie Johns with sound design by Andrew Garrison, explores the contradiction between for-profit institutions and the deep humanity of care workers and residents. The piece ends in healing. The truth of observation is seared into my heart.

“I saw your film the other morning. My grandmother had Alzheimer’s and lived with us when I was a child. Your audiovisual poetry hit home like no piece I’ve ever seen before. I feel honored to witness such a beautiful film.” — Nathan Berkowitz, viewer and filmmaker at AmDocs
